Umweltzeichen werden vom Verein für Konsumenteninformation (VKI) im Auftrag des Klimaschutzministeriums verliehen. Ein Umweltzeichen gibt es für jede denkbare Produktgruppe, nur nicht für die Produktgruppe „Fenster“. Obwohl (oder eben weil?) es sich in Österreich um eine Milliardenindustrie handelt. Hintergrund ist, dass die chemische Industrie hier erfolgreich Lobbying betreibt. Der VKI verweist auf Studien, die bei Plastikfenstern eine Recyclingquote von über 90 Prozent behaupten. Allerdings ohne Quellenangaben. Weil es diese nicht gibt. In Österreich angesiedelte Recyclingcenter räumen ein, dass Kunststofffenster überhaupt nicht recycelt werden. Der Energieaufwand beim Trennen des Verbundstoffes sei enorm und das gewonnene Granulat von minderwertiger Qualität. Ein weiteres Argument des VKI ist, dass Holzfenster zum Teil mit Bioziden (Holzschutz) behandelt werden.
Kurioserweise schreibt aber gerade die ÖNORM bei bestimmten Holzarten und in bestimmten Einbausituationen zwingend chemischen Holzschutz vor. Obwohl es bereits seit langem Holzschutz auf Wasserbasis gibt – also ökologische Alternativen. Die ÖNORM also entsprechend anpassen? Fehlanzeige! Dabei sind Holzfenster, die nicht chemisch behandelt werden, voll kreislauffähig und nachdem das Ausgangsmaterial der natürliche und nachwachsende Rohstoff Holz ist, leistet das Produkt einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Ökologisierung der Bauwirtschaft.
Die Nervosität der chemischen Industrie ist natürlich berechtigt, da die notwendige ökologische Differenzierung zwischen Holz und Plastik natürlich massive Auswirkungen beispielsweise auf die Beschaffung der öffentlichen Hand hätten. Plastikfenster werden darüber hinaus nach wie vor mit Steuergeld, etwa im Rahmen der thermischen Sanierung gefördert. Auch damit hätte es dann ein Ende.
